Yet another in progress post on the portrait of Taylor. I know you guys have to be getting tired of this painting. I hope to remedy that soon by finishing it.

L'étude d'une orange

I wanted to dust off the brushes a bit from my recent hiatus by painting a small alla prima study of an orange. Although I don't think I can call it alla prima anymore since I went back over the blue background this morning to lighten it up a bit. Oh well, I tried. It's tough to give up my layers. Now that I have the rust knocked off I'm planning on getting back to the Taylor portrait sometime this week.

Taylor

Not much has changed with the portrait since the last post (This picture was taken during the day in natural light so the colors differ from the previous post).  I did a little bit of work on the shadow side of the face and the ear, but still have a ways to go. I also laid in another layer on the background.

Things at work have been really hectic recently which has kept me from painting. Today was the first time I've been in the studio in three weeks. Working so infrequently has been challenging, but I think things at work will be slowing down soon and I hope to get into the studio a little more.

Taylor

It's been a little while since my last post, but I have been working. Just haven't had a chance to post anything. This latest piece is a painting from the charcoal study of my son Taylor. I'm done with the underpainting and have just started to lay in the first layer of color. The panel that I am working on is 16" x 20" and I have to say that working on the larger size has been great. I feel like I have room to spread out and move the brush around. I think I might continue this trend of working larger.

It's done! The photo doesn't show much of a change from the previous post, but I did some more work on the face trying capture the values a little more correctly. The actual piece isn't quite as dark as this photo portrays.

In Progress - Taylor

Here is the portrait of my son that I referenced in my last post. I'm in the final stages at this point, but I still need to address some of the values that are in his face. This has been a fun piece to work on. I haven't done a charcoal drawing in a while so it's been a nice deviation from what I have been working on recently.

It's been almost three weeks since I last picked up a paint brush, but finally last night I was able to make it into the studio and made some good progress. Work has been really busy lately, which is great problem to have, but it has been spilling into my evenings. So it was great to get back to painting. At this point I think its pretty much done.

I'm off work for most of this week so I'm excited to have some free time to get something new going. For the next one I'm going to do a portrait of my son Taylor. I'll be doing a charcoal study first and if that goes well I'll start a painting.

I always enjoy it when an artist post detail shots of there work. It's the closest thing you can get to being right in front of the actual piece with your nose an inch from the canvas. So I posted a few upclose shots below.
